Your Elected Officials at Work

Here is the full text of a proposed amendment to the State Education code, particularly dealing with the way that cultural diversity and awareness is incorporated into our public schools.

Introduced by Senator Mark Leno, this bill would require teachers and school districts to proactively cover and specifically point out the contributions of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered (GLBT) individuals in American history.  In other words, it would force our education system to treat these groups as if they were separate cultural and ethnic groups, on a par with groups already named in the existing school code.

For those who argue vociferously that the GLBT agenda will have no impact on our society and culture beyond the tiny percentage of GLBT individuals who choose to get married, this ought to be food for thought.  Declaring gay marriage and alternative lifestyles equal in every way to traditional heterosexual marriages will require active promotion of these alternative lifestyles in schools and other public institutions.  Teachers and administrators will be required to promote GLBT values explicitly and actively  so as to avoid the appearance of violating the law.
I'd say that this is worth staying informed about and letting your representatives in California state government know how you feel about this issue.
