Disturbing Reminder
I've been on the WWW since it was pretty much invented. This is only somewhat interesting, because even for several years after it was invented, there wasn't much of anything to look at on it except browsing the web sites of colleges and universities. They were the only ones really out there. Other than porn sites.
So I'm well aware of the nature of Internet technology, and many of the risk factors that are the trade off for being able to access literally any information you could possibly want or need. Viruses, malware, and any number of other truly dangerous or merely annoying threats exist, and I do a fairly good job at protecting myself from them. However, these aren't the only forms of danger that come from being a wired person. People are interested in what we are doing online. What we buy, what we look at, how we behave. And it's fairly easy to track this sort of stuff. But it's still a little disconcerting when you receive a reminder that the technology that brings the Internet to you can also deliver you to the Internet.
I was just looking at the p90x web site. It's an exercise program I've seen ads for on television and other places - you probably have too. Ripped guys and mind-bogglingly toned women bopping around in a workout routine they guarantee is effective and not nearly as goofy as some of the other programs out there. It looks interesting. So I go to their website to read up a little bit on it. I also check out Amazon to discover that you can get used materials there for half the price.
Then I'm notified (via a message from my blog host to my personal e-mail address) that I have a new comment at this blog. Since this happens about once every vernal equinox, I was very excited and quickly logged in.
To discover that someone had posted a comment with four or five hyperlinks to p90x products. Now I get spam or bot comments from time to time (I just erased a few on an older post that have come in over the past few weeks that I've finally decided to use my gut instinct on and eliminate them as bot posts). But to get something as I'm looking over the website's products, that's a little creepy. Add to that the fact that the comment was posted here, as opposed to a direct e-mail to me.
Just a little reminder that you are not alone on the Internet.
