Ruts
I've been wanting to write all week, but it seems that the only things that I've found to write about are related to politics in some way, and i get tired of writing about politics. We seem to be at such an interesting confluence of philosophy and theology in the public space, but as a historian, I know that's a worthless observation in many respects. There are innumerable such interesting confluences in human history, and even more innumerable times when people thought it was a fascinating confluence when it really wasn't.
Everyone wants to think they live in the worst of times or the best of times. In the end, those sorts of labels are extraneous. We all live in our times. Whether the best or the worst or mediocre, we are called to make the best of what we have been given, when we've been given it. This approach doesn't sell newspapers or drive up advertising revenue, but it's true.
The world resembles a drunken peasant; when you lift him up into the saddle on one side, he tumbles off on the other. There is no helping the world. No matter what attitude you take, it wants to belong to the devil. ~Martin Luther ~
It's OK. I like your political posts. They help me think through politics theologically, and you address issues in ways that, in my opinion, are uniquely Lutheran. And as you point out in your recent posts, the Lutheran church, or most churches for that matter, does not do enough to challenge values that are taken for granted. So thanks.
