World Vision Attacks
I was saddened to read today of the death or injury of over a dozen workers for World Vision in Pakistan.
My family has supported two families through World Vision for years. Thanks to a recent gift, we'll be supporting a third family soon. World Vision is a massive Christian aid organization that works throughout the world. Rather than simply handing out food or money or other necessities, World Vision partners with communities, providing them with necessary short-term aid while also equipping them for long-term improvement through education, improvement projects, etc. If you have considered supporting a child or family before, I would whole-heartedly endorse World Vision. You can register through their website that I linked to above. It's a great use of $40 a month.
The New York Times article notes that World Vision has been working in northern Pakistan for almost five years, after a devastating earthquake destroyed much of the region. World Vision has continued working with the communities there, even though most of us have long since forgotten the destruction of that earthquake since the media is no longer interested in updating us on it.
Staff members in northern Pakistan were robbed and then shot, resulting in half a dozen dead and another half a dozen injured. The assailants attempted to make it sound as though their intentions were religiously motivated, accusing their victims of "spreading immodesty". However the theft and arbitrary nature of the attack seem to make it clear that this is not really the issue. Or if it is the issue, it's a grossly misguided issue. World Vision is careful to work within the cultural parameters of the countries and communities it is invited into. Simply because it's a Western organization, it was identified as a spreader of immodesty, when in fact it was working to help those who otherwise would be dead by now in the aftermath of the earthquake.
Please pray for the families of these victims, and for World Vision as an entity as well as it's individual employees and volunteers around the world. Many people place themselves in harm's way to serve God's people. It is tragic when their efforts are rewarded with indiscriminate attack. This is not the first attack that World Vision has experienced - there have been others such as this and this and this - but it's arguably the worst in terms of the number of people killed and wounded.
