Caffeinated Education
I've been formally teaching in a post-secondary environment for close to ten years now. I've been involved with online education for close to 15 years. It's amazing to experience firsthand the evolutions in the industry.
The first time I was teaching an online course while also on vacation, I relied on public libraries as sources of free or inexpensive Internet access. But over the years, I've been able more and more to find free wi-fi hotspots in convenient areas where I can enjoy a nice coffee or a whole meal even. I've managed and taught courses while on the road in Alaska, Hawaii, and isolated areas of the Pacific Northwest. It's wonderful that the flexibility of online education is not limited to the students, but extends to their professors as well!
The trick remains of keeping students interested in the course over a semester - with the Siren-song of high-speed Internet connectivity luring them away to gaming, surfing, and other time sinks. Some things never change - regardless of the technology involved!
